The Ta’ Qali Basketball Complex will, on Sunday 2nd October, host the male and female Super Cup finals respectively.
In the St James Hospital Women Super Cup Final, present league champions Caffe Moak Luxol are aiming to win this competition for the sixth consecutive time after having emerged victorious in all the Super Cup Finals since 2011.
Their opponents are Hibernians who incidentally are the team with the most successes in this competition with nine victories in history although their last success dates back exactly ten years ago when they had beaten the same Luxol 71-42 in the final.
The last time these two sides met in a Super Cup Final was four years ago when Luxol won a single point 57-56.
The men’s St James Hospital Super Cup Final will feature last year’s BOV KO winners Gzira Athleta and Starlites, the latter taking up the 2016 champions Virtus’ place, having been the feeder club to the same Virtus who has now disappeared from the local scene.
In last year’s final Virtus has put a stop to a run of six consecutive Super Cup victories by Athleta with a 63-55 win.
This year, Gzira Athleta will be facing Starlites’ young squad with most of its players savouring such a final for the first time. The outcome may be either Athleta’s thirteenth success in the Super Cup or Starlites’ first ever success to join both Virtus and Hamrun Liberty on the history books with one Super Cup victory.
