This is a six session, 13-hour (plus exam) course giving an insight into the basic (and a bit more) rules of basketball, mechanics of refereeing, violations and fouls.
Pre-Requisites: None, although some basic experience of the game might be beneficial
Minimum age: 14 years
Course Fee: €10
Candidates must complete an exam and have a minimum 80% attendance record to be awarded an official certification.
Successful candidates may be then also provided with immediate on-court practical experience in the MBA junior competitions.
The course is going to be aimed to:
- a) Anyone, whether a present active player, an ex-player, a club official, a parent or even a novice, who could like to start out in a new aspect of basketball, namely to referee and/or to assist the game as a table official, even if you just plan to work youth games;
- b) Anyone (players, coaches, club officials, parents, students, teachers) who would like to learn more about the way the game is played and see how the game looks from the other side of the whistle;
- c) Students who have a basketball option for their MATSEC PE or Intermediate PE exams as well as university students reading for sport science or PE;
- d) General basketball lovers who just love basketball, but do not really want to play it or coach it. Being a referee or table official can turn this into an enjoyable hobby.
For further information, all those interested in this course are asked to email Bernard Vassallo, the MBA Director in charge of officiating, on [email protected] or mobile 79404404.
Closing date for applications: Sunday 5th January 2020.
