First meeting of the Malta Basketball Association is held at the Civil Services Sports Club, Valletta, under the chairmanship of Benny Pace.

First Annual General Meeting of the Association is held at the Malta Union of Teachers Headquarters, Merchants Street, Valletta.

The Association affiliates with the Malta Olympic Committee (MOC).

Final of the first knockout Competition played at the Polytechnic outdoor-court Msida and won by Mundlos TC.

Year 1967

February
Start of the first National Basketball League played in the indoor hall of the Msida Primary School with ten teams participating. Mundlos, coached by Tony Micallef Borg, are the first League Champions.

April
The first edition of the American Ambassador’s Trophy Tournament is held at the Luqa gym.  R.A.F. (Luqa) are the first winners.

August
The Malta Basketball Association affiliates with the International Amateur Basketball Federation (FIBA).

The first referees course is organised by the mba. Louis Borg and Tony Micallef Borg conducted the course and examined the participants.

June
Anthony Falzon represents the mba for the first time at the FIBA standing conference held in Ischia, Italy.

September
Malta makes its international debut losing to Libya (29-54) in a friendly game at the Luqa gym.

Year 1970

September
CO-founder and ex secretary of the mba, Louis Borg is elected mba president. Eddie miller (v/president), Louis Micallef (secretary) and Joe Depasquale Schranz (treasurer) were the other officials which administered and promoted Maltese basketball making it one of the most popular major sports in Malta.

Joe Farrugia appointed the first official national coach of the association.

Start of the first under 16 league.

April
Malta “a” wins the ambassador’s trophy for the first time.

May
The president Louis Borg attends the xvii FIBA standing conference in Europe and the Mediterranean basin held in Dubrovnik, Yugoslavia.

August
Mcast become the first Maltese club side to participate in an international basketball tournament abroad. The polytechnic side participated in an international universities tournament in Holland.

September
Keith k. Mitchell, general secretary of the English amateur basketball association, member of the FIBA technical commission and himself an international referee, conducts a full referee’s course for the mba.

December
The Minibasket project is officially launched at Stella Maris College, Gzira, under the patronship of the hon. Minister of education, miss. Agatha Barbara.

Year 1972

June
Val Drury wins first basketball player of the year award.

July
Malta is represented by a group of nine players led by Bro. Owen Abela at the 1st World Minibasket jamboree held in Spain.

August
The first Malta Minibasket festival is organised by the mba with the participation of a group of Italian Minibasket players and referees. Exhibition matches are played in various towns and villages.

November
Tullio Paratore a top Italian coach was sent to Malta by CONI to conduct the first stage of a full basketball coaches course. This was the first instructional phase of a three-year course.

Year 1973

February
Eight teams participate in the first ladies national league.
The first basketball matches on an indoor full-size court are played at the large hangar a Ta’ Qali pt at the disposal of the Association by the National Sports Board.
A group of Maltese Minibasket players spend a week in Rome as guests of the Italian Basketball Federation.

Tullio Paratore conducts the second stage of the three-year Basketball Coaches Course.

May
The MBA celebrate its tenth Anniversary concluded by an International Tournament won by visiting Rome Selection.

MBA President, Louis Borg, is voted ‘National Official of the year 1994
Carlo Cerioni, fip’s assistant national coach, concludes the third and final stage of the basketball coaches course.

MBA national coach, Valentine Drury, attends a two-month course at the CONI sports centre in Rome.

March
Malta plays its first full international match with Libya at Ta’ QALI.

September
Malta’s first tour abroad participating in the September first international tournament in Benghazi, Libya.

Former professional player, the American Charles Bennett, conducts a week’s coaching clinic for the MBA.

Malta loses to Libya 68 – 53 in a friendly international match played in Tripoli.

June
Appia Catania wins the first international friendship tournament organised by the MBA.

July
The Malta youths participate in an international tournament in Ragusa. Charles Azzopardi (wrangler) is voted the best player of the tournament.

August
The Malta ladies team participates in an international tournament in Tre Castagne near Catania.

September
The Malta under 21 side participates in the Libyan Sports festival in Tripoli.

October
The top Italian international referee, Vittorio Fiorito, conducts a referee’s clinic.
The crock Russian ladies team, Spartak Leningrad plays an exhibition game with a Maltese selection at Ta’ Qali.
The MBA introduces the three-phase system in the national league.

Opening of the new MBA headquarters at the Silesians’ Oratory in Sliema. Official opening of the new sports hall at De La Salle College in Cottonera.

Monica Moran (Cadettes Haig) is voted “national Sportswomen of the year 1978.

April
Malta’s national side, coached by valentine Drury, wins three matches in a tour of Tunisia.

July
A training camp by Yugoslav player-coach is held at the Polytechnic.

January
MBA general secretary, Mr. Louis Micallef is voted “official of the year 1979” in the National Sport Personalities Contest.

Branik Maribor of Yugoslavia wins the 2nd International Friendship Tournament organised by the MBA.

October
Martti Huhtamaki, President of the Finnish Basketball Federation, conducts a clinic for Maltese referees.

Year 1981

July
Branik Maribor retains the 3rd International Friendship Tournament.
Minibasket leaders, Michael Aquilina and Martin Rizzo, attend Minibasket National Coaching course in Milan, Italy.

September
Four Maltese referees, Louis Micallef, TONIO BRIGULIO, Louis Naudi and Louis Borg (jnr) officiate as neutral Referees in the IV Pan-Arab Basketball championship in Tunis. Mr. L. Micallef controlled the final between Tunisia and Algeria with a KUWAITI UMPIRE.

Year 1982

April
Malta organised a Qualification Tournament of the Xth European Junior Man Championships with the participation of Italy, France, Turkey, Portugal and Malta.

May
Anthony Micallef becomes the first International Basketball referee after successfully attending the FIBA Central Clinic for International Referees held in LAUSANNE, Switzerland.

December
FIP’s Referees Commissioner, Luigi Giordano, conducts a Clinic for local Referees.

Year 1983

April
The Austrian club, ABC Merkur Graz, wins Tournament the 4th International friendship.
Malta participates in an international Minibasket festival in Padova, Italy with positive results.

July
A FIBA regional clinic for international referees is held in Malta. Twenty eight candidates from eight European countries, six Maltese, attended the four day clinic successfully organised by the MBA.

Year 1984

May
An important conference “basketball in Malta – tomorrow” was organised by the MBA.
MBA president, Mr. Louis Borg is appointed technical commissioner on the recommendation of Mr. Lazarov.

September
Mario Blasone, staff coach of the Italian National teams, conducts a coaching course through the Olympic Solidarity.

November
First international appointment for Maltese FIBA referee, Mr. Anthony Micallef.

Year 1985

February
The MBA moves into its new administrative office in Birkirkara.

May
The XXXth session of the FIBA standing conference is held in Malta. Mr. F. Busnel, FIBA president, Mr. M. Koslovski, president of the European zone and Mr. B. Stankovic, secretary general of FIBA presided over the well-organised conference held at the Corinthia Palace Hotel, Attard.
Malta participates in the first edition of the games for small European states held in San Marino winning the first bronze medal for Malta. Mr. John Tabone coached the team. This was the first medal won by Malta in an official international competition.

October
Malta wins the “Angelo Custode” tournament in Sicily.

Year 1986

April
New English league champions, Manchester United, pay a two-match visit in Malta.

December
During a friendly international tournament for small countries hosted by the MBA, representatives from Malta, Cyprus, Iceland, Luxembourg and Wales (supported by Ireland, Gibraltar and San Marino) meet to discuss the possibility of requesting FIBA to help Small European countries to organise an official tournament.

March
Louis Borg (Malta) and Rene Schiltz (Luxembourg meet MR. Stankovic and Mr. Pitz of FIBA to discuss the Small Nations movement.
The basketball pavilion at Ta’ Qali is leased by government to the MBA.

April
The FIBA executive committee proposes the creation of a promotion cup to be organised for the Small states of Europe. Dr. Radomir Sharper is appointed permanent commissioner.

May
The Malta Basketball Association is entrusted to organise a qualification tournament of the “1987 European Youths Men Championship “ with Greece, Israel, Finland and Malta participating.
Malta coached by Mr. John Tabone retains the bronze medal in the second edition of the small nations games held in Monaco.

September
Claudio Bardini from the Italian Federation conducts a coaching clinic in Malta.

December
A new parquet is inaugurated by the MBA at the Ta’ Qali basketball complex. Dr. Ugo Mifsud Bonnici, then Minister of Education presided over the ceremony.

January
Mr. Louis Borg, MBA president, is voted “ official of the year 1987 “ in the national sports personalities contest for the second time.

April
Mr. Radomir Sharper visits Malta to monitor the preparations for the FIBA Promotion Cup.

November
The MBA moves to its new offices at the refurbished Ta’ Qali Basketball Complex.

December
The MBA organises the 1st edition of the FIBA European Basketball Promotion Cup.

May
Malta, coached by Mr. John Tabone, places fifth in the 3rd Small nations Games held in Nicosia, Cyprus.

Malta participates in the 1st edition of the “ FIBA European Promotion Cup For Women “ held in Luxembourg.

Jacqueline Schembri (Fiat) wins the “Sportsmanship Act Trophy”

June
An indoor gym and clinic are inaugurated at the Basketball Complex in Ta’ Qali.

Mr. Leonard Falzon is appointed FIBA international referee.

Mr. Lino Vassallo is elected president of the MBA. Mr. Louis Borg is nominated President Emeritus of the MBA and is attached to the Malta Olympic Committee as sports director in preparation for the Small Nations Games to be held in Malta in 1993.

Malta’s ladies team coached by Mariella Piscopo and Val Drury, win the Bronze Medal in the Small Nations Games held in Malta.

Year 1994

June
Joe Farrugia is elected MBA president.
The first FIBA Promotion Cup for Women is held in Malta.

Leonard Falzon is appointed FIBA Commissioner.
Nicholas Azzopardi is appointed FIBA International Referee.

Bernard Vassallo is appointed as a FIBA International Referee after successfully completing the FIBA Referees Clinic in Bratislava.

Italy’s National Coach, Ettore Messina conducts Course for senior coaches.

October
The Malta Falcons play a series of ‘home’ and ‘away’ games against Italian B1 sides. The Falcons, coached b Alfred Mifsud, win seven from eleven matches.

December
Magistrate Antonio Mizzi is elected President of the Malta 2Basketball Association.

Year 1997

May
NCAA team of Dayton University visit Malta.
Malta’s MEN, COACHED by Alfred Mifsud and Kevin Decesare, win The Silver Medal In the small National Games held in Iceland. The Maltese Women, coached by Kevin Zammit secure the Bronze Medal. Mr. Leonard Falzon in nominated FIBA national referee’s instructor. Mr. Bernard Vassallo is appointed FIBA international referee.

June
MBA participated in the Euro jamboree during the Euro Basket finals.
The first JUNIOR women promotion cup was held in Malta. Malta Placed 6th in tournament.

Malta organises the first FIBA junior women promotion cup.

‘Air Malta La Vallette’ under coaches Felix Schembri, Kevin Decesare and Joe Galea participates in the Italian League Serie C1.

The 49th General Assembly Standing Conference of the delegates of the national federations of Europe is staged at the Westin Dragonara resort, St. Julians.

Year 2000

May
Visit of NCAA team of Marshall University.

July
The Cadets team won for the first time ever a bronze medal in the FIBA European Promotion Cup.
Mr Tom Scheeman (FIBA) conducts a coaching course in Malta under auspices of the MBA, MOC, IOC, FIBA.

Year 2001

February
The Malta government transferred the property at Ta’ Qali to the MBA for 49 years. The property includes the existing basketball complex and the land around the complex for future development.

June
The president of the MBA Magistrate Antonio Mizzi appointed FIBA President of European appeals board and also member of the FIBA European zone board.
The male senior national team coached by Mr. Joe Galea, participated for the first time in the 33rd European Championship for men. The other participating teams were Austria, Hungary and Rumania.

December
The marketing manager of FIBA Mr. Zoran Radovic had meetings with MBA officials regarding the present and future of basketball in Malta.

Female national team wins first GOLD medal in the GSSE organised in Malta.

The Ladies Basketball team win the Team of the year (2003) award organized by the Sportswriters association.

Fisec girls team wins Bronze medal in the games organised in Malta.

The Ladies Basketball Team is awarded the MOC Silver award during a gala night organized by the MOC.

Bernard Vassallo referees the Final Game of the 2016 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.

Female national team participate in the COMMONWEALTH GAMES held in Melbourne Australia. Playing against New Zealand, Malasia, India and Nigeria.

Bernard Vassallo is voted ‘Sport Official of the Year 2006’ by the Malta Sport writers Association during the National Sports Awards event.

Mag. Antonio Mizzi elected once again in the FIBA Board. Frank Camilleri and Ray Mercieca also reappointed in the Small Countries Commission and Finance Commission respectively

Female national team wins GOLD medal in the FIBA European Championship Division C held in Armenia.

July
Male national team wins BRONZE medal in the FIBA European Championship Division C held in Malta.

Year 2011

A new team was elected to run the MBA , with President Mr. Paul Sultana, Deputy President Dr. Trevor De Giorgio, Secretary General Mr. Joseph Muscat, Treasurer Mr. Noel Muscat, and Vice Presidents; Ivan Micallef, Anthony Camilleri, David Schembri and Ottavio Terribile.

Bernard Vassallo officiates in the EuroBasket 2011 Women European Championships in Poland.

Infrastructural and cosmetic works started on the Pavilion
New U/23 League was introduced

Mr. Paolo Di Fonzo was appointed as Men Senior National Coach.

The Gozo Goodwill Cup was introduced for the first time. This was played at the Gozo Pavilion, Victoria Gozo. This first edition was won by Athleta B.C.
Foreign players re-introduced in all Senior National Leagues.
Adjacent land of circa 11400 sqm was handed over to MBA by KMS.

MBA organized an ALL STAR GAME in aid of l-Istrina. Over €3000.00 were donated to MCCF

Mr. Paolo Di Fonzo and Mr. Santino Coppa conducted a coaching course under auspices of the MBA and KMS.

Male national team wins BRONZE medal in the FIBA European Championship Division C held in San Marino.
Female national team wins BRONZE medal in the FIBA European Championship Division C held in Macedonia.

Ms. Angela Adamoli was appointed as Women Senior National Coach.
Prof. M. Mondoni conducted a coaching course under the auspices of the MBA and KMS.
Pavilion flooded after the 3rd September’s storm. New parquet was laid on top of a newly built elevated roofing structure to prevent future damage due to floods.
The St. James Hospital Pre-Season Tournament (previously known as the Gozo Goodwill Cup) was held at the University Gym Tal Qroqq, this year for both 1st Div Men and 1st Div Women. Siggiewi B.C. won the Men’s section and Luxol B.C. won the Ladies section.

Female national team participates in the GSSE Small Countries GAMES held in Luxembourg. Playing against Iceland, Luxembourg and Cyprus

Elections for the new Administration confirmed President Mr. Paul Sultana, Secretary General Mr. Joseph Muscat, Treasurer Mr. Noel Muscat and Mr. Ottavio Terribile as Director. The other elected members are Mr. Ray Mercieca as Deputy President, Dr. Carlos Bugeja – Director, Ms. Kimberly Borg -Director and Mr. Charles Bonnici – Director.

Female National Team U/18 wins SILVER medal in FIBA European Championship Division C held in Andorra.

FIBA Europe U16 Men & Women Div C for Small Countries are held here in Ta Qali – Malta
A memorable year for Maltese Basketball. Our National Teams have won 5 medals out of 6 in the following Categories.
Male National Team U/16 wins Gold medal in FIBA European Championship Division C held in Malta, for the first time.
Female National Team U/16 wins SILVER medal in FIBA European Championship Division C held in Malta.
Male National Team Seniors wins SILVER medal in FIBA European Championship Division C held in Gibraltar.
Female National Team Seniors wins BRONZE medal in FIBA European Championship Division C held in Austria.
Female National Team U/18 wins SILVER medal in FIBA European Championship Division C held in Andorra.
